DAMIEN. - [GROSLEY (Pierre-Jean)]. Reflections... - Lot 9 - Rossini
DAMIEN. - [GROSLEY (Pierre-Jean)]. Reflections on the January 5th Attack on the King's life. S.l.n.d. [dated March 5, 1757]. - Letter from a patriot, In which the facts are reported which prove that the author of the attack on the King's life has accomplices, & the manner in which his trial is being conducted. S.l.n.d. [dated March 11, 1757]. - Declaration of war against the Authors of the attempted parricide on the person of the King. S.l.n.d. dated 22 March 1757]. Set of 3 books in one volume in-12, marbled calf, cold cloth binding, decorated spine, red title coin, red edges (Bound in 18th century cloth). Collection of 3 pamphlets relating to the Damiens trial, each in original edition. These libels, due to Pierre-Jean Grosley (1718-1785) and printed clandestinely, were suppressed and condemned to fire by a decision of the Paris Parliament on March 30, 1757 (cf. Pierre Rétat, L'Attentat de Damiens, 1979). The Jesuits, suspected of involvement in the attack, were attacked there with the utmost firmness: But what is more appalling, & which must make the Sovereigns tremble on their Thrones as long as they let this monstrous Society remain in their States; is that it was on principle that it taught the subjects to kill their Kings (Lettre..., p. 31). Interesting copy constituted at the time by an amateur who added at the end 5 pieces in manuscript verses violently criticizing the Clergy and the Jesuits. Little bit missing.
