JAPAN Suzuribako in rogin and hedatsu lacquer, decorated in hiramaki-e of gold and brown lacquer, inlaid with aogai and mitsuda of Shoki richly dressed in brocades visible in the corner of a collapsing wall, the back of the lid showing two running oni taking shelter. The interior is patterned with gold lacquer basketry, the mizu-ire depicting a tengu head in shibuichi. Signed Zeshin followed by the artist's seal.
