BATONI POMPEO GIROLAMO (Workshop of) Lucca 1708 - Rome 1787 The Holy Family with St. Anne, St. Joachim and little St. John Oil on canvas (Rentoilage) H. 83,5 - W. 47 cm Reduction of the altar painting (Canvas. 403 x 228 cm) painted for the Church of Saints Cosme and Damien in Milan (1738 - 1740) and kept at the National Gallery in Brera (Cf. Edgar Peters Bowron and Peter Björn Kerber, catalogue of the exhibition Pompeo Batoni Prince of Painters in Eighteenth - Century Rome; Fig. 4, pp.5 & 6 - Houston & London 2008). There are several variations between the two compositions, the attitude of the two putti in the upper left corner, the veil of the Virgin passing behind her neck, the absence of a white drapery on the body of the infant Jesus or the colour of Zechariah's mantle, yellow ochre in the Brera version, as well as in architecture against a landscape background in the background - plan.
