ANSON (George). Journey around the world, made in the 1740s, 1741, 1742, 1743, 1744. Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstee & Leipzig. Merkus, 1751. New edition of the French translation, illustrated with 35 maps and folding plates. It is not cited by Sabin nor by Borba de Moraes. George Anson (1697-1762) was one of the most brilliant officers of the English Navy. In 1740-1744, at the head of a military squadron, he led an expedition against the Spaniards in the Pacific and captured a galleon full of gold near Manila. He returned triumphant in England, with extraordinary loot estimated at £500,000. His account contains details of Brazil and the discovery of gold mines in Sao Paulo, Macau and the Philippines.
