Jean PROUVE (1901 - 1984) Door from a "Métropole"... - Lot 116 - Rossini
Jean PROUVE (1901 - 1984) Door from a "Métropole" type house, circa 1949-1953, in grey matte lacquered sheet metal with six portholes in the upper part (small dents and shocks). Height 242 cm - Length 98 cm - Depth 8 cm Completely repainted, small dents and traces of drips, deformation to one of the portholes and to the frame, small accident in the lower part on the hinge side Provenance: piece made for one of the ten houses "Métropole" route des Gardes in Meudon. History: At the end of the Second World War, the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned the Ateliers Jean Prouvé to design a low-cost house that could be reproduced in series to create social housing. Although the project did not come to fruition, fourteen houses were finally installed on Route des Gardes in Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine) between 1949 and 1953. Our door comes from one of them. Bibliography: Patrick Sulzer, Jean Prouvé - Œuvre complète, Volume 3: 1944-1954, Basel, Éditions Birkhäuser, 2005, similar model reproduced on p. 118 ; Laurence Allégret & Valérie Vaudou, Jean Prouvé et Paris, catalog of the eponymous exhibition from May to August 2001, Éditions du Pavillon de l'Arsenal - Picard Éditeur, pp. 170 and 177 for photographs showing the "Métropole" type houses installed in Meudon.
