Jean-Pierre BOYER (1772-1851) military, President... - Lot 296 - Rossini
Jean-Pierre BOYER (1772-1851) military, President of the Republic of Haiti and later Supreme Chief. L.S., Port-au-Prince August 15, 1821, "year 18th of Independence", to Marc-Antoine JULLIEN DE PARIS, founder-director of the Revue Encyclopédique; 2 1/2 pages in-fol. on his letterhead Jn Pierre Boyer, President of Haiti, large and beautiful engraved vignette of the Republic of Haiti (drawn by L. Vuillaume and lithographed by G. Engelmann). Very rare letter. He received the letter in which Jullien asks for his support for M. SAINT-GEORGES. "I do not think that this young man, by conforming to the laws and customs of the country, has the slightest difficulty in the success of the business that has been entrusted to him; the protection that the government is pleased to grant to commerce should not leave foreign speculators who come here any fear about the result of the operations that they seek to make here... He maintains a high opinion of the Revue Encyclopédique. "I am angry and not surprised by the obstacles that this writing meets from shady men and enemies of all philantropy; it is natural that everything that shines brightly hurts eyes that fear the light, but what is no less true is that the more these passionate men will make efforts to hinder the progress of the review the more they will give it relief. A production which occupies such a distinguished place in the literary world, which has obtained so many honorable votes must necessarily triumph either a little sooner or a little later from all the attempts directed against it "...
