BASTILLE. Autograph manuscript signed by SAINT-GERMAIN, " rue nicolas faubourg antoine N° 6 ", Description d'un projet de monument à elever sur l'emplacement de la Bastille..., [juin 1793 ?]; 2 pages and a half in-fol. The general mass of the project represents in plaster the ruins of the Bastille, in the form of a square on which one will be able to read the Declaration of the rights and the duties of the citizen, the Constitution, the times of the principal events of the Revolution, the whole decorated with busts of great men, public fountains and guardrooms. "In the middle of each face is a wide staircase of twenty steps to reach either the column of the center, or the four pedestals which are on the four corners. The column of the center is an isolated pilaster on which are written the declarations of the rights and the duties of the citizen, with this preamble: to the national convention the free and recognizing French people and is crowned by the genius of the freedom carrying an inscription where one reads: French Republic one and indivisible. On the pedestal of the column are the tables where one reads the first articles of the constitution; in the four corners of the pedestal are figures standing and leaning on open books where are written the names of the citizens died in the revolution victims either of the royalism, the fanaticism, the terrorism &c where which died voluntarily by deffending the fatherland "... At the four corners, there will be a fresh water fountain bearing Liberty, a well water fountain bearing Equality, and guardhouses of the national guard and firemen bearing, respectively, Safety and Property...
