[Charles-François DUMOURIEZ (1739-1823)]. P.S. by the conventioneers François-Paul-Nicolas Anthoine and Antoine-Louis Le Vasseur, Metz April 7, 1793; 3 pages in-fol. Treason of Dumouriez. Important proclamation of the two deputies, "Commissioners of the National Convention in the Departments of Meurthe and Mozelle", denouncing "the infamous treason of which Dumouriez was guilty towards the Republic", reassuring "the good Citizens", and wanting "to thwart the plots of the emissaries that he could have directed either on our strongholds, or on our armies; wanting also to give to our brave soldiers a brilliant occasion to show the horror of which they are penetrated for the traitors and for the Despots, as well as their love for Freedom, their fidelity to the Sovereign People"... Etc. This long proclamation ends with an oath that everyone must take: "You swear to die rather than recognize a King, a Dictator, or any authority other than that of the French People and the National Convention. You swear to maintain the Liberty, Equality and Unity of the French Republic and to keep the posts that will be entrusted to you at the risk of your life"... Enclosed is the Decree of the National Convention [...] which summons to the Bar the generals Valence, Égalité, Ligneville, Westermann, and others, April 4, 1793 (Paris, Imprimerie Nationale exécutive du Louvre, Gohier's signature and red ink stamp).
