René LALIQUE (1860–1945) - Lot 15
René LALIQUE (1860–1945) Necklace with six oval “Grosses graines” beads, a design created in 1920, on a black braided cord. Molds in pressed molded glass, matte and glossy satin green (minor chips). Unsigned. Height: 3 cm – Diameter: 2 cm History: featured in the 1928 and 1932 catalogs. Removed from the catalog in 1937, not reprinted after 1947. Bibliography: Félix Marcilhac, René Lalique – Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre de verre, Les Éditions de l'amateur, Paris, 2011, “Necklaces” section, pearl model listed under no. 1500 and reproduced on p. 557. Through this long necklace of solid-colored, pressed-molded glass beads, René Lalique returns to his first love: jewelry. This is no longer the work of a goldsmith and jeweler as he might have been in the past, but rather a simplification of his approach to jewelry by giving it an entirely new dimension. His first glass bead creations date from 1914 and continued until 1930. The inherent fragility of glass is here turned into irony to create a piece of jewelry that is precious in its material yet very refined in its design; the whole is linked together by trimmings with skillfully constructed knots.
