This large-scale copper painting is based on a composition by Frans Francken II (1581-1642), with minor variations, itself inspired by compositions by his father Frans Francken I (1542-1616) and Marten de Vos (1532-1603). The original painting is probably the one in the Hermitage Museum (inv. ГЭ-410).
The production of copies and replicas was at the heart of the business model of Frans Francken II's workshop to meet a high demand, almost every original composition by Frans Francken II was reproduced in highly variable qualities. Our painting is certainly one of these fine copies, as its precious support attests. Moreover, the n°210 on the reverse suggests that it was once part of an important collection.
