Flemish school, 17th century, workshop of Frans II Francken - Lot 208
Flemish school, 17th century, workshop of Frans II Francken (1581-1642) The Wedding at Cana 41.8 × 59.2 cm Oil on copper Annotated "n°210" on verso of copper plate Provenance Madrid, Ansorena, January 21, 2020, lot 600 This handsome copper repeats with minor variations a composition by Frans Francken II (1581-1642), itself inspired by compositions by his father Frans Francken I (1542-1616) and Marten de Vos (1532-1603). The original painting is probably the one in the Hermitage Museum (inv. ГЭ-410). The production of copies and replicas was at the heart of the business model of Frans Francken II's workshop to meet a high demand, almost every original composition by Frans Francken II was reproduced in highly variable qualities. Our painting is certainly one of these fine copies, as its precious support attests. Moreover, the n°210 on the reverse suggests that it was once part of an important collection.
