GÉRÔME Jean-Léon, attributed to, Lying Warrior, Black pencil drawing on paper (some foxing), unsigned, on verso stamped Collection Paul et Florence Vercier (L.3607), no. 2115, 16x36 cm. PROVENANCE: Galerie Tainon antiquités, Bayeux, 24/4/1984. The Vercier archives mention an exchange with Mr. Gerald Ackermann, who confirmed the drawing's authenticity by letter in 1989. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF A RELATED WORK: Gerald M. Ackermann, Jean-Léon Gérôme, ACR Édition, Paris, 1986, painting described and reproduced as n°110 pp.204-205. This drawing is a study for the figure of the dead gladiator in the painting Ave Cesar, morituri te salutant painted in 1859.
