DEVÉRIA Eugène, attributed to, - Lot 266
DEVÉRIA Eugène, attributed to, Henri IV and Fleurette , Brown ink wash, white gouache and black ink highlights (foxing), signed lower right, annotated on back in corner: G de B, annotated lower right on mount: D56, 23.5x31 cm. An episode from the youth of Henri IV during King Charles IX's tour of France organized by Catherine de Médicis, which took place in 1565 at the Court of Navarre. An archery competition, Charles IX's favorite pastime, was organized in Nérac. The young Henri IV proved to be a better shot than Charles IX, who took offense. The next day, Henri IV took on the Duc de Guise, a courtier of the young king, who hit the first target, an orange. The second target was a flower adorning the corsage of a young spectator. Henri IV's stroke hits the target, and the young prince returns the rose, still on his arrow, to the young villager named Fleurette. Henri IV is overwhelmed by the beauty of the young girl and falls in love with her. This anecdote was recounted by Étienne de Jouy.
