The Starfighter Affair - Aviation - Lot 187
The Starfighter Affair - Aviation "Siegfried Arndt, one death too many", Set of 5 photographs presenting the investigation carried out by the German army following the numerous accidents and deaths aboard the F-104, including the portrait of First Lieutenant Arndt. 5 vintage silver prints, copyright "Stern : Foto : Heidemann" on back 29 x 20 cm "In 1956, the fledgling Federal Republic of Germany was authorized to establish an army. The Luftwaffe (air force) was rebuilt, and in the early 1960s was equipped with the American F-104, which Lockheed advertised in leading West German magazines from Spiegel to Stern, under the benevolent eye of the conservative government of the day. During test flights, the young pilots were enthusiastic. But this sophisticated aircraft soon earned such unflattering nicknames as "flying coffin" and "widow maker". After all, as soon as it made its debut in Luftwaffe colors in June 1962, it suffered a series of fatal accidents. By 1989, the date of the last crash, a third of the 970 aircraft put into service had crashed, resulting in the deaths of 116 pilots and several dozen civilians on the ground."
