Koran, North Africa, 19th century
Small square Qur'an handwritten on paper with 12 lines of text per page in Maghribi Arabic in sepia ink, some names in red ink, diacritical marks in polychrome inks. Illuminated titles in polychrome inks, inscribed in ochre in colored cartouches extended by a marginal medallion with radiating decoration. Some marginal inscriptions in frames. On the last page, Ex-Libris 2 Truchis and pencilled name "Cap ne de Margerie". Flap binding in garnet morocco with stamped decoration of a poly-lobed mandorla decorated with foliage and four quatrefoils in the corners.
11.6 x 11.5 cm
Two folios detached, one folio foreign to the heart of the manuscript, small stains and tears, some folios restored, small folds, binding worn, slightly detached from the folios, flap detached.
The name mentioned on the last page in pencil appears to be Captain Jean Jacquin de Margerie (1884-1958), Captain of the Chasseurs à Pied and Knight of the Legion of Honor. In 1921, he became a director of the Banque Commerciale du Maroc, where he acquired this Koran.
