History
This model of an abbé précepteur correcting one of his pupils, while a second girl reads a book behind the master's back, is a counterpart to La Maîtresse d'école, also by Falconet after Boucher. The works of painter François Boucher were a popular source of inspiration for artists working in various fields in the mid-18th century. Prints based on his paintings were widely distributed, providing artists with compositions that could be faithfully reproduced on a smaller scale or adapted for three-dimensional bisque sculpture. Boucher's works served as inspiration not only for the scenes painted on vases and snuffboxes, but also for the porcelain bisque figurines listed as "Enfants Boucher" in the factory's sales records.
