PRECIOUS RELIC OF KING LOUIS XVI - Lot 180
PRECIOUS RELIC OF KING LOUIS XVI Heart-shaped pendant medallion in silver (800 thousandths) and low-title gold set with rhinestones (three missing), the central part in domed crystal hinges open to enclose a lock of white hair tied and held by a silver ribbon knot set with white stones. The medallion is preserved in a rectangular green velvet case and is presented in the center of a brown silk fleur-de-lys, accompanied by a silver plate engraved with "Cheveux de S.M. Louis XVI / donnés / par Marie Antoinette" ("Hair of S.M. Louis XVI / given / by Marie Antoinette"). H 4.3 x W 3.2 cm. Gross weight: 9.3 g (medallion). Provenance Château de La Noë-Sèche (Côte d'Armor), former collection of Viscount Jules-Marie Armand Cavelier de Cuverville (1834-1912), Vice-Admiral, Chief of Staff of the Navy, Senator for Finistère between 1901 and 1912. Exhibition Marie-Antoinette et son temps, Galerie Sedelmeyer, 4 bis, rue de la Rochefoucauld, Paris, 1894, under no. 44. Literature This relic is mentioned in the Revue des Beaux-Arts, in the article devoted to the "Marie-Antoinette et son temps" exhibition, p. 117: "Here are those we have noted somewhat at random, as all would be worth mentioning, the choice, among the objects offered, having been made with the greatest circumspection and the most perfect taste by the Exhibition organizers... A spinning wheel turned by Louis XVI; a diamond heart with the King's hair; a spinning wheel made by Louis XVI for Marie-Antoinette and given by her to a relative of the owner - to M. Le vicomte de Cuverville".
