Ambroise SICARD (1742-1822) priest, teacher of the deaf and - Lot 233
Ambroise SICARD (1742-1822) priest, teacher of the deaf and dumb. L.A.S., [1808?], to François Roger, member of the Corps législatif; 3 pages in-8 (small gap at bottom corner without loss of text; stamp from the Jules Mony collection). Abbé Sicard asks Roger to intervene on his behalf with Fontanes, Grand Master of the University, for a position as ordinary advisor or inspector. "All my friends believe that I am suitable for one of these positions, because they are not unaware that my whole life has been devoted to public education, either in the teaching Congregation of Christian Doctrine, or in the institution I have directed for the past 25 years, or in the Écoles Normales". Fontanes "knows my love of work, my zeal for the public good [...] He has given me constant proof of esteem and friendship [...] I could have had great protections from him", notably that of the Empress. But the Abbé did not want to "force Fontanes' hand"... 9785/594
