Joseph de BARRUEL-BEAUVERT (1756-1817) ardent royalist, one - Lot 217
Joseph de BARRUEL-BEAUVERT (1756-1817) ardent royalist, one of the editors of the Acts of the Apostles, writer, he was imprisoned in the Temple. Autograph MANUSCRIT, and 2 L.A.S., [1796]-1808; 5 pages in-4. MANUSCRIT autograph, signed "Grenier patriote de tous les tems" (2 p. in-4, Hennessy collection stamp). This text, addressed to the "Editors of all truly patriotic newspapers", violently attacks the Jacobins, "having Tiger fever and unable to tire of revolting, pillaging, raping, murdering, drinking pure or tear-soaked blood". Alluding to Babeuf's conspiracy, he mocks the deputies who want the people to believe "that Jacobins or Royalists are the same men!" He points to DROUET, who "lost Louis XVI [...] Drouet and Santerre, who were the main agents behind the King's death"... But "the people are not unaware that the ci-devant Comte de Barruel-Beauvert, elector, full of fire, who came, with stentorian lungs, to demand in the Sections of Paris insurgent against the authority of the Convention, the release, without any conditions, of the daughter of Louis XVI, is not a Jacobin!... Jacobins have never done anything but dddu mal, Royalists, unless one wants to judge the Vendémiaire question as intentional, have never done any harm [...] Royalists are only after the government, and Jacobins are after men and property"... L.A.S., "A la tour du Temple "10 nivôse X (December 31, 1801), to citoyen d'Audiffret, aux Sables in Vendée (2 p. in-4, addressed). Letter written from prison, in which he waits for the First Consul to set him free: "If I get out of the tower where I've been cloistered for 23 months [...] it will be the end of my 53rd month of uninterrupted captivity"... L.A.S., Vesoul October 18, 1808, to FONTANES (1 p. in-4). Letter in verse and prose: "Auguste est sur le trône: où donc est son Mécène? 9785/925
