Antoine-Marie-Charles GARNIER de l'Aube (1742-1805) Conventi - Lot 179
Antoine-Marie-Charles GARNIER de l'Aube (1742-1805) Conventionnel (Aube). L.A.S., [1794?], to his colleague Jean MAILHE, représentant du Peuple; 3 pages in-4 (small tear missing with loss of some letters). He receives a touching letter from Cherest's wife: "Why is her husband locked up in a dungeon? What authority other than that of violence and arbitrariness could have dictated this inhuman order? Surely it won't be so shameless as to say that it's the Convention; will this appalling battle of the parties be eternal, and will a few lawyers, prosecutors and butchers fighting to see who has the most domination have the right to disturb an entire city with impunity? The great evil comes from Maure's wanton hatred of Cherest; Maure, to crush this man more surely, has chosen Fourcade as his most cunning enemy"... Maure has taken advantage of Garnier's absence to usurp power. "De grace rend justice à Cherest: la justice est de entendre contradictoire, de le tirer de prison où la fureur de ses ennemis l'a jeté afin qu'il puisse batre d'égal à égal, et alors tu jugeras que touts ces messieurs là ne s'injurient et ne s''emprisonnent que parce que touts veulent dominer et pas un seul obéir"... 9785/827
