AVIGNON. L.S. by about fifteen prisoners, Palais d'Avignon i - Lot 162
AVIGNON. L.S. by about fifteen prisoners, Palais d'Avignon in the ci-devant Grande Chapelle 11 fructidor II (August 28, 1794), to citoyen Mongendre, agent national près le district, à Marseille; 2 1/2 in-fol. pages, address. Petition following the Neuf Thermidor and the decree of the 18th, freeing suspects against whom no charges have been brought. "Tu le sçais, 85 déténus de ton district partirent comme des criminels pour Orange, ou ils devoient être les premieres victimes destinées à remplir les 3 fosses que l'on avoit preparées pour 18 000 cadavres. The Convention, having saved their freedom for the 2nd time, on the 9th and 10th of last year, finally issued its wise and just decree of the 18th ... several of us have [...] written to our parents or to the Supervisory Committee, and not one of us has yet been able to obtain the reasons for our arrest"... Representative Goupilleau de Montaigu, who visited their prison this morning, was astonished to learn that the Marseilles Supervisory Committee did not issue the reasons for detention. So, "persuaded of your zeal to enforce the laws", the detainees asked the national agent to order the Marseilles committee to issue each of them with these "reasons"... 9785/799
