Jean Sylvain BAILLY (1736-guillotiné 1793) scientist and ast - Lot 75
Jean Sylvain BAILLY (1736-guillotiné 1793) scientist and astronomer, first Mayor of Paris. L.S. co-signed by Pierre Manuel (procureur de la Commune) and M.L.F. Duport-Dutertre (substitut au procureur), Paris July 6, 1790; 1 1/2 pages in-fol. Housing crisis before the Fête de la Fédération: "maitres d'hotels garnis are abusing the need of some of our provincial brothers to rent rooms they may need at exorbitant prices. It pains us to see citizens taking advantage of such circumstances to satisfy only their own interests. Such conduct carries with it a distressing sense of immorality. It is unfortunate that at a time when all the people of France are about to unite under a solemn oath, when only the most intimate feelings of brotherhood should be listened to, there are a few citizens who let themselves be carried away by the love of gain". Such abuses must be suppressed... Attached is a printed document Confédération nationale. Adresse des Citoyens de Paris à tous les François (June 1790, in-4, 12 p., worm gallery); plus a certificate of participation for Peyrouze, deputy for the Drôme dep. (July 2, 1790).
