THEOPHILANTHROPISTS. 10 letters or documents, 1797-1800; in-fol. or in-4, several headings and vignettes. Interesting file concerning the installation of the Theophilanthropes in the church of Saint-Gervais. This deist sect, which formed around 1796, obtained authorization from the Directoire to meet in churches open to worship, outside of service hours; the Consulate forbade such meetings. 10 brumaire VI (October 12, 1797). Petition signed by around a hundred theophilanthropists from the 9th arrondissement, including CHAPUIS, one of the sect's main founders, asking to be allowed to worship in Saint-Gervais church, alongside Catholics. They conclude with this oath: "We swear hatred for royalty and anarchy, attachment and fidelity to the Republic and the constitution of the year three". - 24 vendémiaire (October 15). Extract from the deliberation of the municipal administration of the 9th arrondissement, granting "the building known as St Gervais" to the "theophilantropic cult". - 4 brumaire (October 25). Decree from the central administration of the Seine department, approving the 9th district decree; with letter of dispatch and acknowledgement of receipt. - 10brumaire (october 30). "Organization of the Theophilanropic cult in the Temple de la Fidélité, also known as the Church of St. Gervais, one of the buildings granted for the free exercise of all cults"; regulations in 25 articlles (7 p. in-fol.). - 28 brumaire (November 18). Petition signed by 9 "citoyen théophilantropes" (including Chapuis), complaining about the decree of 24 vendémiaire, which, instead of granting them the entire building, only granted them the nave, three hours only instead of four, etc. - 28 brumaire (November 18): Order from the central administration of the Seine department, following the petition: "the Theophilanthropic Citizens will enjoy the entire edifice [...] with the same clauses as the Citizens who already enjoy it"; with letter of transmittal.5 pluviose VIII (January 25, 1800): Report from police commissioner Voilquin: "The Theophilanthropic cult at the Temple de la Jeunesse today celebrated the commemoration of its establishment. There was vocal and instrumental music, and a speech was given [...] on the advantages of natural religion"... Etc. 700/800 €
