Napoléon, marquis then 3rd duke of BASSANO (1844-1906) son of the preceding. 6 L.A.S., 1872-1880, to his friend Ernest Théroulde; 28 pages in-8, one envelope. Empress Eugenie's trip to Zululand. Amusing announcement of her forthcoming marriage (May 10, 1872). Trip to Chislehurst for August 15 and speech by the Prince (August 18, 1873). Interesting letters from South Africa in 1880, where he accompanied the Empress to the place where her son had been killed; they are written from the Helpmekaar camp (May 6), the Muhula camp in Zululand (May 23), aboard the Trojan (July 26) and finally from London (July 29). We enclose 4 letters addressed to Théroulde, including one from Caroline de Bassano, Marquise d'Espeuilles, and 2 from Eugène Beyens.
