Richard RIEMERSCHMID (1868 - 1957) & REINHOLD MERKELBACH manufacture Covered punch bowl, model created circa 1902-1904. Stoneware proof with spherical body on three small curved feet and lid with conical handle. Fadenrelief" decoration of small stylized leaves in green and blue enamel on a beige background. Marked and numbered on reverse. H. 33.5 cm History: Richard RIEMERSCHMID was a member of the functionalist wing of the Munich Jugendstil movement. This punch bowl, one of his earliest creations, is an important example of abstract design in the German applied arts at the turn of the 20th century. Similar examples are in the British Museum in London (inv. 1982,0510.8), the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 2010.363.1a) and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. BK-2009-272-2).
