Armand-Marc, comte de MONTMORIN SAINT-HÉREM (1745-1792) dipl - Lot 108
Armand-Marc, comte de MONTMORIN SAINT-HÉREM (1745-1792) diplomat, minister of foreign affairs, intimate adviser of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, one of the members of the "Austrian Committee", he was massacred on September 2, 1792 at the Abbey. L.A. (signed with an initials), [December 3, 1790], to Cardinal de BERNIS; 6 pages small in-4. Important letter on the civil constitution of the clergy and the obligation of the civic oath for priests (decreed on November 27). Montmorin informs Bernis of the critical, frightening situation of the clergy and religion in France. "One cannot hide from oneself that there are people who would like the absolute overthrow of religion and perhaps of the throne. We have the greatest need of wisdom and extreme prudence. Some people blinded by their prejudices, irritated by the loss of their state and their fortune, are lulled by the idea of what they call a counter-revolution, I know that many people are fed this chimera, both within and outside the kingdom; [...] nothing is more foolish, nor more absurd than this chimera. [...] Those who would attempt a counter-revolution would achieve nothing other than to rally even more those who made the revolution, and the most certain result would be a universal massacre of the clergy and the nobility. [...] It is up to the wisdom of the pope to help us. All the bishops of the assembly await and desire a favorable response [to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy], the king personally attaches a great interest to it ". Montmorin did not want to send a deputation to Rome, and fought for Bernis to take this step; everything was in his hands. "If the pope does not grant his consent [...] I look upon religion as lost entirely in France, and the kingdom delivered to troubles and convulsions whose effects it is impossible to calculate"...
