César FRANCK. Autograph musical manuscript, La Procession, [ - Lot 684
César FRANCK. Autograph musical manuscript, La Procession, [1889]; 4 fol. pages on a bifeuillet, in pencil. Melody with instrumental accompaniment on a poem by Auguste Brizeux: "Dieu s'avance à travers les champs"... [CFF 160 (FWV 88)]. The last melody composed by César Franck, "La Procession was conceived directly for voice with orchestral accompaniment. [...] Franck achieved a perfect match between poetic declamation and the instrumental commentary that envelops it. [...] The accompaniment, based on a chorale-carillon theme, evolves with complete independence from the vocal line" (J.-M. Fauquet). Charles Koechlin admired La Procession for "forming a whole: a symphonic development in short form, of a very new realization, without prejudice to musical unity and logic"; Vincent d'Indy praised its "charming and healthy mysticism". The work was a great success at its first performance at the Société Nationale on April 27, 1889, in Salle Pleyel. In E, in 4/4 time, here with no indication of movement (it will be marked "Assez lent et solennel" in the edition). The manuscript, a very early draft in cursive black pencil on 16-line Lard-Esnault paper, shows erasures and corrections, with a few bars crossed out, and indications of instrumentation: strings, wind, harp, harmonium. The instrumental prelude (15 bars) appears to have been composed after the fact, on the 4th page, on 2 staves with instrumental indications; at the end, Franck lists the instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, timpani, 2 harps, 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass. p. 668, 783-784, 957
