Pair of Ottoman mirrors Wood, mother-of-pearl... - Lot 213 - Rossini
Pair of Ottoman mirrors Wood, mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell inlay Turkey, 17th - 18th century, Ottoman Empire H. 63,5 - L. 30,5 cm These mirrors are typical of the Ottoman marquetry productions of the 17th and 18th centuries. Entirely inlaid with mother-of-pearl forming delicate vegetal, floral and geometrical motifs on a tortoiseshell background, they each have two windows opening onto mirrors. The inside of the panels and the back of the mirrors are decorated with mother of pearl and tortoiseshell checkerboards. The decoration of these mirrors is a continuation of the marquetry work done on the imperial galley of the time of Mehmet IV, kept in the Istanbul Naval Museum (see Celal Esad Arseven, Turkish Decorative Arts, (circa 1960) Istanbul : Mîllî Egîtîm Basimevi).
