Sénac de Meilhan (1763-1803), a lawyer in the Paris Parliament and later Intendant of La Rochelle, Provence and Hainaut, was one of the great detractors of luxury at the end of the 18th century. In his Considerations, he studies man in society and reflects on the respective influence of war and peace on the national character.
