[CHASTELLUX (François Jean marquis de)]. Public bliss. Or co - Lot 35
[CHASTELLUX (François Jean marquis de)]. Public bliss. Or considerations on the fate of men in the different eras of history. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1772. 2 volumes in one volume in-8, marbled half-basane with small corners, red title piece, yellow edges speckled with red (Binding of the period). Goldsmiths, number 10824. - INED, n°1705. - Coquelin & Guillaumin, t. I, p. 337. Original edition. Companion in arms and friend of George Washington, Chastellux (1734-1788) endeavoured to measure progress and to demonstrate, with the help of his clues, the possibility of an improvement in the human condition. By comparing in his main work [Of Public Bliss] the situation of men in different periods of history, he sought to find out whether or not progress had been made. His conclusions on progress and population already herald Condorcet. ...] This analysis also shows the need to seek the solution of the evils of mankind, not in artificial plans, but in the accumulation and diffusion of knowledge and in the evolution of social progress (Spengler, pp. 236-240). A copy in contemporary binding, slightly later. The table leaf of volume II, which should be in volume I, has been moved by the bookbinder after the title of volume II. A few slight foxing.
