COLLECTIVE, edited by COCHET (Pierre and Scipion). *Le journ - Lot 468
COLLECTIVE, edited by COCHET (Pierre and Scipion). *Le journal des roses*. Melun: E. Drosne; Paris: A. Goin, 1891. In-8, special monthly edition of the fifteenth year, illustrated with 11 color plates. Red half-basane binding, smooth spine with decorative lettering, brown title label, covers preserved. Handwritten bookplate reading “Elisabeth Countess Greffulhe Bois Boudran.” An interesting copy bearing the handwritten bookplate of Marie-Joséphine-Anatole-Louise-Élisabeth de Riquet, Countess of Caraman-Chimay and Countess Greffulhe, a prominent figure of the Belle Époque. She hosted a salon and was close friends with Stéphane Mallarmé, De Heredia, and Edmond de Goncourt. A second cousin of Robert de Montesquiou, she moved in literary, musical (Franz Liszt and Gabriel Fauré), and photographic circles (she was a student of Nadar), as well as scientific circles through her support of Marie Curie. She is particularly famous for having inspired Marcel Proust’s character, the Duchess of Guermantes. A rose was named in her honor by Louis Lévêque in 1896. (worn binding, pages with narrow margins)
