CABET (Étienne). Voyage en Icarie, roman philosophique et so - Lot 179
CABET (Étienne). Voyage en Icarie, roman philosophique et social. Paris, Mallet et Cie, 1842. In-12, half red basane, smooth ornate spine, gilt SP initials on tail (Period binding). Second edition, the first under this definitive title, of the famous utopia by socialist writer Étienne Cabet (1788-1856), originally published in small numbers in 1840 (Versins, pp. 140-141). Le Voyage en Icarie is a utopian novel that has enjoyed a singular fortune. It was taken literally and inspired such enthusiasm that thousands of men and women took the name of Icarians, embraced Cabet's communitarian doctrine, poured their savings into helping found Icarie and financially supported the enterprise for fifty years; finally, in 1849, several hundred citizens left everything behind to go to the United States to build the ideal society imagined by Cabet (Francis and Gonthier, Partons pour Icarie, p. 14). Unspecified initials on tail. Light brown spots.
