BERTIN Nicolas (Attributed to) Paris 1668 - id. ; 1736 The wolf and the lamb in a wooded landscape with a river running through it Oil on panel. Oak (minor restorations; old oxidized varnish). Signed lower right in capital letters: BERTIN On the reverse, annotated lower right Bertin. H. 31 - L. 38.5 cm Antique carved and gilded wood frame with foliage and foliage scrolls. Nicolas Bertin is credited with a subject illustrating, as here, a fable by La Fontaine: L'ours et l'amateur de jardins, sold at the Touard auction in Paris on February 22, 1779. (Cf. Thierry Lefrançois, Nicolas Bertin, p. 168, no. 215 (quoted) - ARTHENA1981). A woman painter by the name of François Bertin was admitted to the Académie de Saint - Luc in 1748 (Cf. E. Bénézit, vol.12, p. 220 - Gründ 1999).
