LABAT (John the Baptist). Journey of the Chevalier Des Marchais to Guinea, neighbouring isles and Cayenne, made in 1725, 1726 & 1727. Paris, Charles Osmont, 1730. 4 volumes in-12, granite calf, cold fillet, ornate spine, orange title-piece, red edges (contemporary binding). Chadenat, No. 97. - Gay, n°2819. - Sabin, n°38414. Original edition of this esteemed relationship, illustrated with a title-frontispiece and 31 plates, most of them folding, depicting fishes and marine mammals, coastal views, maps, costumes, etc. For the writing of this work, Father Labat used the papers of a great man of the sea, captain of a frigate which left Le Havre in 1724 to engage in triangular trade between the coasts of Guinea and Cayenne. Volume IV contains the text of the famous Black Code (pp. 535-583), as well as an abstract of the language spoken in the Kingdom of Judah in Guinea. Clear freckles, tears without missing a few plates. A few cuffs damaged by the bookbinder's hand. Caps and corners of Volume IV restored. Binding rubbing.
