The Holy Face with the Crown of Thorns
Oil on canvas (Small lacks in the lower part; small restorations in the upper right on the forehead and towards the middle left on the cheek, small restoration towards the middle left on the cheek, and in the background. Old varnish soiled)
On the back an old trace of an old inscription

Analogy: Related to a similar version by Philippe de Champaigne, painted on wood, slightly smaller (36,5 x 28 cm) (Cf. 1 - Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Etude Million & Associés; expert René Millet. 03 December 2001 - 2 - Catalogue of the exhibition Philippe de Champaigne Entre politique et dévotion. N° 9, 99. 98 & 99 - Lille, Palais des Beaux - Arts 2007)).

Philippe de Champaigne painted at least five times, according to Bernard Dorival, the Holy Face of Christ: three of them in the form of the Veil of Veronica, one, if not two of them on a brown background with a simple nimbus just on the top of the head (Cf. Philippe de Champaigne, volume II. n°65 & 2043 bis; Paris 1976).

It is this last interpretation that we find in the engraved versions, first by Lucas Vosterman (Antwerp 1595 - 1675) during his stay in Paris (1630), then by Jean Morin, before 1652 (Cf. Bernard Dorival. Supplement to the Catalogue raisonné of the works of Philippe de Champaigne, n°50.1 & 50.2, pp.65 & 66 - Paris 1992).

The position of the crown of thorns on our canvas, like that of the Holy Face painted on wood, is found in the engraved version by Lucas Vosterman, and in part in that of Jean Morin (Cf. Véronique Meyer, Philippe de Champaigne et les graveurs de son temps. Nouvelles de l'Estampe, 247 / 2014, pp. 30 - 31).
