Ornamental trophy of a canoe in carved and... - Lot 291 - Rossini
Ornamental trophy of a canoe in carved and patinated wood mixing an anchor, the trident of Poseidon, the caduceus of Mercury and warrior attributes such as a cannon, cannonballs, a boarding axe, a scimitar, a rifle, flags, all united by a crown of laurel leaves and vine branches. The predominance of warrior attributes tend to attach this panel, composed of four planks assembled horizontally, to the navy. The absence of attributes from the Revolutionary or Empire period and the neoclassical composition of the trophy make it possible to date it from the end of the 18th century and more precisely from the reign of Louis XVI. French work, Louis XVI period. Later patina. H. : 74 cm History: exhibition of the Musée de la Marine de Honfleur in 1973.
