Oil on canvas (Rentoilage; restorations; old dirty varnish) On the reverse side an inscription probably copied during the re-covering: GIO. CANTI / PITTORE / PARMIGIANO / MORTO LI 4 Luglio / 1716 SEPOLTO / IN MANTOVA / IN S.AMBROGIO H.: 50 cm - W.: 40 cm. Provenance: Former private collection from Florence. Bibliography : Mantova nel Settecento, n° 158 p. 144 (reproduced), notice by Donatella Martelli (1983). The author refers to the presence of a larger portrait of Giovanni Canti in an eighteenth-century inventory of the gallery of Villa Strozzi, near Gonzaga (Mantua province), in an eighteenth-century inventory.
