ROSLIN Alexandre (School of) 1718 - 1793 Portrait... - Lot 11 - Rossini
ROSLIN Alexandre (School of) 1718 - 1793 Portrait of a beloved (or favourite) woman She wears a necklace of pearls on her chest, a rose placed near her uncovered throat; her head tilts on her right arm, a star can be seen above her headdress. Oil on canvas (Rentokilage; small restoration on the forehead) H. 45,5 - W. 37,5 cm Gilded wood and stucco frame from the first half of the 19th century with dolphins and palmettes, bearing an inscription in capital letters: COMTESSE DU BARRY (NATOIRE) The slightly languid pose evokes that adopted by Pierre Mignard (1612 - 1695) for his portrait of the Countess of Ludres (1647 - 1726), mistress for a time of Louis XIV. She holds around her right arm a crown of roses, sliding on her uncovered breast, like the one presented by the Countess du Barry (1743 - 1793) in her famous portrait (1770) by François - Hubert Drouais, then again (1782) in that of Elisabeth Vigée - Le Brun (1755 - 1842). The bluish star above the head is inspired by the so-called "en Point du jour" portrait of the Duchess of Châteauroux, Louis XV's favourite, by Jean - Marc Nattier (Musée Cognac - Jay).
